Inmates, Arpaio prepare for Tent City anniversary

The 18th anniversary of Tent City is Wednesday and both Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the jail's inmates are getting ready to celebrate the occasion with a cool breeze, a huge slab of granite and some cake.

The business community, in partnership with Fulton Homes, is donating a tombstone-like slab to mark the exact spot where Arpaio announced the opening of Tent City 18 years ago. The concrete pad for the marker will be constructed by current inmates.

The slab is engraved with the name of the facility, its opening date, Arpaio's name and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office logo.

In addition to building the new resting place for the marker, inmates have been making hundreds of pink "Sheriff Joe fans" to provide them a small bit of relief from the summer heat.

Inmates will also be given cake, a special concert from a detention officer, who midnights as an Elvis impersonator, and possibly an appearance by Arpaio himself to sing his song "My Way".
