A posse of Maricopa and Pinal County women have organized a campaign fundraiser this Saturday for Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu.

The event, called Women of the West Salute Sheriff Paul Babeu, will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Race Bar & Grill, 49237 W. Papago Road, in Hidden Valley.

Tickets are $50 for a buffet-style barbecue and casual western attire is encouraged.

“We are so looking forward to it; it’s going to be so much fun,” said Cheryl Chase, who managed Babeu’s campaign when he ran for election in 2008.

Chase said she is accustomed to organizing campaign fundraisers on her own, but decided to make this one a team effort.

“I called a few of the ladies in Maricopa and asked ‘Would you like to take on this project? Would you like to organize a fundraiser?’ and turned them loose,” Chase said.

Along with Chase, members of the host committee are Ana Kennedy, Anna Marie Knorr, Brenda Hermanson, Jeanna Del Cotto, Lorraine Gillespie, May Mccarthey, Suzette Gregg and Trecia Estes.

Chase said the women are proud of Babeu for being named National Sheriff of the Year by the National Sheriffs’ Association and want to stay focused on that achievement for his 2012 re-election campaign.
Since taking the reigns as sheriff, Chase said Babeu has improved response times to dispatch calls, put computers in all of the department’s patrol vehicles and increased staff and supplies, including new ballistics vests to replace the old ones that were unsafe.

About 150 tickets have been sold so far, Chase said, and there will be two live bands, one playing during dinner and another after dinner.

For tickets, call Trecia Estes at 520-705-6988.
