Police Officer Shot in Glendale

GLENDALE - A police officer has died after being transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound, in the third officer-involved shooting in the valley Friday night.

It all started at 75th Ave and Glendale in Glendale, just before 9 p.m. Glendale Police Officer Brad Jones and a probation officer were sent to an apartment complex there to contact a probationer.

At some point during the conversation, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the Glendale Police officer several times, according to Glendale Police.

The suspect allegedly stole the officer's patrol car and took off. He got to 80th Ave and Glendale where he crashed the patrol car and fled on foot.

Officers were close in pursuit and the suspect again pulled his weapon, and it's believed he fired shots at the pursuing officers.

Officers returned fire on the suspect multiple times and he was taken to a trauma hospital.
The police officer who was shot was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital. Officer Brad Jones died overnight. He was 27 years old.

The suspect has been identified as 20-year-old Ryan Heisler. He remains in critical condition.
Heisler was arrested and charged in December of 2009 for possession of burglary tools.

Earlier Friday, two jewelry store robbers engaged in a drive-by gun battle with police officers pursuing them, and an Avondale police officer was forced to fire upon a man advancing on him with a knife.
No officers were hurt in the other incidents.
